Hiking Trails & Suggested Itineraries
Detailed breakdowns of hiking routes, trail lengths, difficulty, and step-by-step 1, 2, and 3-day itineraries.
Understanding the Trail Network
To reach the core beaches of Tayrona (like Cabo San Juan), you must hike. There are two primary trailheads, offering vastly different hiking experiences:
1. The El Zaino Trail (The Classic Route)
- Distance: ~6 km (one way to Cabo San Juan).
- Time: 2 to 2.5 hours.
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
- Terrain: Paved boardwalks, sandy tracks, and dirt paths winding through humid forest and coconut plantations. It is relatively flat with a few short, gentle hills.
2. The Calabazo Trail (The Strenuous Route)
- Distance: ~9 km (one way to Cabo San Juan via Pueblito/jungle path).
- Time: 4 to 5 hours.
- Difficulty: Strenuous.
- Terrain: Steep stone stairs, rugged dirt paths, exposed roots, and boulder scrambling. This trail climbs deep into the hills before descending to the coast.
